Puppy and Kitten Pet Care: What Our Veterinarian Wants You to Know
It's exciting to add a new pet to your family. As you already know, with this excitement comes a lot of work. At Ashworth Road Animal Hospital, serving West Des Moines, Windsor Heights, Clive, and Urbandale, our veterinarians are here to help you care for your new pet.
It's important that you bring your new puppy or kitten in for a wellness check. We'll check their weight, vital signs, and give them a look over to see if there are any issues that need to be watched. We'll also talk with you about a vaccination schedule to ensure that your new pet is protected from preventable diseases. We'll talk about the food you've chosen for your pet, and make recommendations if necessary. If you desire, we'll discuss and schedule spay/ neuter procedure.
Behavior and Training
It's a good idea to enroll your new puppy in a behavior training class. Not only will this get him off to a good start when it comes to listening to your commands, it will also give him the opportunity to socialize with other dogs. Getting puppies in the habit of being around other dogs early will save you from socialization problems down the road. If you need recommendations for a behavior class, feel free to ask at your pet's appointment.
You'll want to establish a house training routine as soon as possible. For kittens, this is easy. Most cats will naturally use the litter box with little to no training from you. Simply show them where the box is, and they will know to go there when they need to use the bathroom. Puppies are a little bit more difficult. Remember, puppies don't have a ton of self-control yet. They can typically hold their bladders for the same number of hours as months old they are (a 6 month old puppy can hold it for 6 hours). Take them outside often, and reward them for doing the right thing to reinforce going to the bathroom outside gets them a treat!
