Pet Safety in an Emergency

Pet Safety in an Emergency

We all want our pets to be safe and healthy but sometimes there are emergencies that threaten your pet's health. When there's a medical emergency, you can be forgiven for being frantic and not knowing what to do next. There are things you can do at home to help in an emergency, and then you can bring your pet to the veterinarian for pet care. When pet safety depends on your actions, make sure you understand the kind of care your pet needs. To see us for a veterinary visit, you can call us at our West Des Moines, IA, office. We at Ashworth Road Animal Hospital are here to help.

Blood Loss

If your pet is injured and is losing a lot of blood, you have to act. Take a clean cloth, and press it into the injured area. This might totally stop the bleeding. If it doesn't, keep the pressure on and get your pet to a veterinarian right away. If you have to move away from your pet, use a bandage to keep the pressure on. Your pet may need stitches to stop the blood loss. This is one of the conditions treated at our animal hospital.

Dehydration

There are a lot of diseases and other problems that can cause diarrhea and/or vomiting. If your pet has either, he might get dehydrated quickly. This can lead to dizziness, passing out, and even death. If your pet can't keep liquids inside for a while, bring them to our veterinary office. Dehydration can also be caused by getting heat stroke. If your pet gets overheated, get him to a cool place and give him a small amount of water to drink and bring him in to get pet care.
